Giraffe Heroes Project Logo

Welcome to Giraffe Heroes

We are a US-headquartered nonprofit that honors real heroes around the world, tells their stories, and inspires others to follow their lead into courageous, compassionate service.

We believe that “citizen courage” is a key to a just and ethical world.

As you work with young people, you are training the next generation of citizens for your country. We can help you do that.

Why a giraffe?

We use the giraffe symbol because in English, “to stick your neck out” means to be brave and the giraffe has the longest of all necks. If that phrase has no meaning in your country, perhaps “stand tall,” would be a better explanation. Again, the English expression means to be brave, standing up for what you believe in.

We’d like to help you foster in your students the caring concern that will make them stand tall as great assets to their community.

What do we offer you?

Over the upcoming months, we’ll be putting more and more of our materials for schools here on the Teachers Without Borders website. For now, here’s what we have for you~

~A seven-minute film about Giraffe Heroes and about the work we do here.

~A classroom lesson you can use for any age students to help them learn the difference between celebrities and real heroes.

~The full text of our “Service-Learning Guide,” a way to apply students’ academic skills to real-world problems. Giving them the chance to make practical use of skills they’ve learned inspires many students to further studies and gives them the confidence of being valued contributors to their community.

~New! We've begun emailing "Tips for Involving Students in Service Learning Projects" FREE to all members of this group. We've sent out two, so far, and you can expect to receive many more this year! (Follow this link to a "Page" where you will find all the Tips sent to date.)

~New! We've created an on-line group forum where you can give us feedback, share your experience as a teacher using the free Giraffe materials provided to members of this group, tell the story of what your students are doing and get tips from other teachers who are also using these materials. Please tell us what you think!!

~An invitation to explore www.giraffe.org, where you’ll find stories of heroes from all over the world.

Please register as a Giraffe user so we can notify you when new materials are ready for you here.

Coming soon

~Voices of Hope, an anthology of 40 heroes’ stories followed by discussion questions.

~It’s Up To Us, a handbook for doing community service successfully.

~Lesson plans you can use for students from the youngest to the oldest.

And in the future…

We’re working to get all these materials online for you. You’ll be notified as each new section is completed—but only if you’ve registered for these notices.

We look forward to hearing what happens when Giraffes enter your classroom!
